Having a heck of a time in the catacombs of Candlekeep (spoilers requested)

Alright, I got into the catacombs under candlekeep last night and I keep dying. I can get to the point where you meet Elminster, Tethroil, and Gorion (they ARE doppelgangers aren't they?!) and then, no matter what I say, I end up dying as a result. If I follow, I get attacked by about 4 or 5 doppelgangers and a Greater Doppelganger. If I decide to fight, they change into doppelgangers and one Greater Doppelganger and I lose 3 out of my 6 characters. And on top of it all, after half my party is gone and I'm weakened, a bunch of skeletons come and start taking me out! So I guess what I'm trying to say here is...... HHHHHEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!! What do I do?!?!?!

Haste your party. before you come in line of sight of the doubles, cast a fireball to weaken them. If you have a thief, use him to backstab the greater double (elminister I think) before you talk to them. while your party kills the normal double gangers, use magic missile to remove the greaters mirrior image.

Ok, I got through the catacombs but I think I might have made a mistake.

After passing through the catacombs I got into a small cavern area, when I went down the passage I ran into a group of 4 enemies that put my party down with little or no trouble at all. I figured, if I can't beat 'em, run you a$$ off and save your skin! So, I gave my player character several potions, those boots that make you run double speed and I also gave him several pieces of equipment that I couldn't replace (rings of protect +1, ring of holiness, long bow of marksmanship, etc.) and decided to run for my life. I got past the warriors, lost all party members EXCEPT my main character (it cost a FORTUNE to resurrect them all) and got out. I lost several rather nice bits and pieces of equipment that I couldn't carry and as a result of totally re-equipping my party, most of my money.

Here's where I think I made a mistake:
I didn't kill that group of bounty hunters/whatever the heck they are. Was it important for me to do that? Did halt the story because I didn't kill them? Do I have to go back there and kill them or am I ok? Please let me know if this run was futile if you can.....

IM not sure whether they are important or not, but i know they have a letter, so maybe they are.
Anyway, they´re not too hard i think. You can always use the cheese tactics (like making them come to you one by one, or throwing some fireballs BEFORE actually seeing them by just knowing where they are), but you should be able to beat them without those tactics too. What level is your party ?

I tried to post here last night and warn you how hard these were. Did you just run through the cavern and not stop to take on the other monsters? There was a ton of experience points to be had here! If you can, go back and try to fight them again. There was also some pretty good items to get here as well. I used fireballs to soften them up and then swooped in from every direction to get them. It took me several trys to do it. It's a tough fight, but then thats what the game is about. Never back down from a challenge! If I'm not strong enough the first time then I'll go back later and do it again.

If they take my gun can I still use my Axe?

you should kill that group of npc beecause the one that has
blur cast on him has a pretty sweet throwing axe +2
that returns to you hand. plus there is alot of experience
in that cave.

Kivan Ranger Lv. 5
Yeslick Fighter/Cleric Lv. 5

I've been getting this feeling lately that my levels are a bit too low, am I right?

That could be a bit low. I'm having trouble right there and my party is:
Arwen- fighter level 6
Kivan- ranger level 6
Minsc- ranger level 6
Branwen- cleric level 7
Imoen- thief level 7
Dynaheir- invoker level 6

They are just a bit low. But I think with a little patience you could take those fights on. Have you tried all the quests that are out there to do? I did everything out there proir to this chapter and all my characters are
Me a Ranger=7
Minsc=7
Adjantis=6
Imoen=8
Branwan=7
Dynahir=7

I think I have picked up just about every quest there is outside of Baldurs Gate. I'm sure I haven't done all of them in Baldurs Gate, though. There are probably a lot more out there to do in the big city.
