The Associated Press
Thursday, November 15, 2001; 10:22 AM LONDON Defiant in the face of stunning setbacks, Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammed Omar said in a radio interview Thursday that he'd rather die than join "an evil government" with Afghanistan's former leaders. "We will not accept a government of wrong-doers. We prefer death than to be a part of an evil government," Mullah Omar told the British Broadcasting Corp., dismissing a U.N. proposal for a multiethnic Afghan government. Mullah Omar also warned of a larger strategy the "destruction of America" without specifying what actions may be taken. The BBC asked the Pashto-language questions by satellite phone through an intermediary who passed them onto the Taliban leader through a hand-held radio. His exact location was unclear, but the private Afghan Islamic Press agency reported earlier Thursday that Omar was in a safe place and in charge of his troops. Northern alliance advances, backed by U.S.-led bombing, have cost the Taliban their grip on the Afghan capital, Kabul, and deprived them of huge swaths of territory. Mullah Omar acknowledged that his forces "may have made some mistakes," and was in control of only four or five Afghan provinces. "But it is not important how many provinces we have under our control," he said. "Once we did not have a single province, and then the time came when we had all the provinces, which we have lost in a week." He called the Taliban pullback from urban centers part of a larger strategy. "The current situation in Afghanistan is related to a bigger cause that is the destruction of America." "If God's help is with us, this will happen within a short period of time keep in mind this prediction," he said. "The real matter is the extinction of America, and God willing, it will fall to the ground." "I tell you, keep this in mind. This is my prediction," he warned. "You believe it or not it's up to you. But we will have to wait and see." |

Well yes, you would say that when the UN has already stated that you won't be allowed to be a part of the government, wouldn't you??? He called the Taliban pullback from urban centers part of a larger strategy. Unfortunately, he's probably being truthful here. The Taliban are serious guerilla fighters - they are not the stuff of infrantry divisions. On the other hand, so are the Northern Alliance Personally, I think that the interviewer missed the big question: "If you could turn back the clock, would you have done anything differently after September 11th?" quote: I dare not argue with Two Fitty because this is his playing field and I am just the visiting team. Humor aside...I acknowledge that strong words are being thrown back and forth and I look at it as fodder for the media. I really believe that they have been sensationalizing many things and taking entirely too many things out of context. There are so many extremes of anger to consider. Do I fear the possiblity of every single muslim in the United States rising up and doing away with the rest of us? I don't fear it, but I do respect it. I haven't known such total devotion to a religion since the times of the Crusades. The "if God is with us" theme does ring familiar to me. It's always a struggle to figure out whose side God is on. I'll refrain from quoting scriptures here. It appears that both sides of the struggle have their chaplains.

quote: The sad thing is Muslims and Christians believe in the same God. They believe in Jesus (as a prophet, but not the Son of God), and that Mohammad, who came along 600 years later, was the last and greatest prophet.

I think he's just rehashing a bunch of old issues. He hasnt said anything that Osama hasnt already mentioned. They seem to be taking a united stand on this one.
It doesnt stop being scary though. Its all well and fine to say he's bluffing but one cannot be sure he doesnt have a hidden Ace up his sleeve. The very threat conjurs up images of nuclear and chemical destruction and it scares the daylights out of me.. a single nuclear weapon detonated on American soil will be the greatest tragedy of the new millenium. The last thing we want now is Washington turning into a radioactive fallout crater. We can always say that "terrorists cant control our lives, we wont live in fear", but how can anyone remain unafraid in the face of the threats the entire world faces? How long can we lie to ourselves that terrorists can do all they want but they'll never change or affect us? Sept 11th demonstrated that we are all at risk, no matter where we live. Islamics have also predicted the downfall of America and the triumph of Islam over all other religions. Call me a bigot, but I for one would rather die than bow to a towel-headed God.

quote: In all honesty, I doubt that God has much of a need to wear headgear, but if he did, I personally don't think it would change HIS benevolence if it was a turban, a yarmulka, or a baseball cap with NYPD written on it. I sincerely hope that you consider the absurdity of equating what Mullah Mohammed Omar wants with what the grand majority of the Muslims in the world desire. I do not think they are interested in making you choose between dying and accepting their faith. You might want to ask some of the Muslims you know...though if I were you I might think about rephrasing your reference to their God as being a "towel-headed God". |

Regarding headgear, I must say that I believe that my deity has an Eagles hat during the winter months and a Phillies cap during the summer months. Perception, my friends.

quote: It is not so much that they would want us to accept their faith or die...at least here in America...the term "just die" is more the expression I have seen from Americans who've converted. I am not prejudice against skin color or religion so don't get me wrong here, but I have had neighbors who converted to the Muslim religion and later on they became really scary people...racism where there wasn't any before and hatred for whites in general. That's not what Christ taught, nor, I doubt, is it what Muhammed intended to be interrpreted from his prophecy. There is another player in this game that people keep overlooking...it's called money. |
