Well, the theives won't let me join: they are in a huff over a certain code book.

And the head of the fighters guild want's me to wipe out thier leaders on behalf of the cammona tang.

Course, no one LIKES the cammona tang, and I hate to help them, but if its the only way to lead the fighters guild, I can live with it...

Or can I? any big negatives for accepting this quest?

I'm not sure whether there are any specific guild-negatives to doing this quest, since you're not able to join the thieves guild anyway. You may get in trouble with the guards if you initiate the fight, which is always annoying if you have stolen goods (I always had a bunch of stuff that I didn't think was stolen (and some that I KNOW wasn't ) so when I got in trouble I'd end up 20 pounds lighter and not know what had been confiscated! Irritating ).

However it is not necessary to do this quest to become kingpin of the fighter's guild. Each of the quest givers gives you enough quests that you can get to the top without doing every one of them (that goes for the other guilds as well). I didn't do this quest and I got to the top.

Spoiler?

When you get to a certain level in the guild (maybe when you need 60 in a skill to advance?) you can go talk to Percius Mercius who will start giving you quests. The last quest he gives you will allow you to become the head of the guild. So you don't need to do this quest

Cool... but who is Percius? Is that the one in Ard Ruhn?

The guy who wants me to kill the thieves is the current fighters guild chief... the nord in Vivec that normally just has you talk to the orc. Orc says he has no more jobs for me, can't promote me, I've got to speak to the Nord, Nord says if I get rid of them, then 'Gentleman Jim', top thieves guild guy in morrowind, he'll retire and make me boss.

BTW: anyone know where this Gentleman Jim can be found? The nord mentions some corner club-- I think it starts with 'S', but its not one I've heard of, and no one in Vivec has it in their dialog menus.

I'll ask some of the other guild bosses before I off any of the theives, I think...

Once you done the code book quest for Fighter Guild. you can never ever join thief guild.

Percius is Fighter Guild boss in Ald Ruhn. Gettlemen Jin Stacey can be found on book store at lower foreign quarters ( look behind the locked door )

Too bad about the code book... now when I ask thievs about the Camora Tang, they mention how happy the general is, and that "YOU have been seen talking to the General quite a bit recently. Coincidence? I don't think so..." Really, seems like they should forgive and forget, especially now that I have the code book back. Course, none of them want it...

I took Aleia's advice, spoke to Persius, became guild master that way. Much more emotionally fulfilling...

Of course if you are second to top rank in the fighters guild you can just kill the the top guy and you will become the guild master. It basically came down to going Percius route and killing off some of the fighters guild people or going the guild masters way and killing of the thieves neither of which I wanted to do so I just killed the guild master of the fighters guild and took his rank. A lot less blood shed that way. Which was weird for me since I was Telvanni and had only a little issue with killing them off to get what I wanted. Anyway...

Next time you play the game, go join ALL the guilds before you start doing jobs for one or two of them. That will leave all your options open. The fighters guild won't applaud you when they find out that you're also on the Thieves guild payrole, but they won't do anything about it either.

You have to taunt the person holding the "code book", when they attack you kill them and the other guild member will not attack you unless you attack the book holder. If you'd like to remain as a Thieve's guild member, you may pay a 100 gold fine to the thieves guild leader and continue.

OK, thanks, will remember that for next time...

But since the woman who gives you the codebook quest is essentially working for the Camona tong, can I just bypass that mission, and do work for other more... Imperially minded fighter bosses, stay on the theives good side, and still de-throne the pro-Camona leader of the fighters?

You can bypass that quest and do quest for fighter boss in Ald Ruhn and Sadrith Mora. you can also do the quest for that Orc in Vivec city fighter guild.
