I recieved Morrowind several months ago as a gift, but I am just now sitting down to play it. I have one question: where do I start?
I need a good way to get started. I figured that since one of the first things I heard of in the game was this group of thieves (or whatever) nearby, I should go there first. Well, I walk in and the first guy takes about 25 hits before he dies, leaving me barely alive. I rest a bit and continue on, finding this mage guy who kills me right away. Hmmm.... Pretty fair. So it seems that I should come back here a bit later, when I am stronger. Fine. So where do I go to GET stronger? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know what kind of character you're playing--fighter type, magic type, or thief type--but you might try taking the silt strider to Balmora and joining one or more guilds of your liking. They will give you some tasks that should allow you to "get stronger" in the appropriate skills for your character. It can be tough for some types early on, but later you'll be zapping everything in sight. Have fun!

I've restarted the game about 5 times trying to find the exact type of character I want to play. in every game I play, I almost always choose paladin- or ranger-type characters, so this time I think I will be playing an assassin just for the heck of it

Well the first thing you can do is explore a little. Kill some crabs and such and get a level under your belt. Then you should head to Balmora (you can take the silt rider) and join one of the guilds there. If you are an assassin character try the thieves guild...you can join there on the north side of town in a tavern. These guys give you some quests and some rewards and their quests are fun. If you really want to do assassin missions you need to join the morag tong guild. It is hard to find the guild leader that will let you join. (Hint: somewhere in vivec)They have fun missions where you get to kill people, legally. You can also just start working on the main quest by talking to Cauis Cosades in Balmora as well. Always use you map to help you find things. If you use the local map it will give you the names of buildings instead of running around trying to figure out which one is which.

Anyway this is a great game. There are a couple things that can make the game easier for you though. Take Security as one of you major skills, this can help you get some nice gear. I also recommend using some kind of range attack. Marksman is fun and Destruction is pretty good. It is really difficult to take out fighters at low level without wearing them down first. Play the game for awhile and get the hand of it, then go get some of the great mods that are out there. Some of them make the game a totally different experience.

That's all I can think of for now. Let me know what else you want to know about this game.
