Okay I'm a knight. And restoration is one of my minor skills. But I don't know how to improve it (apart from trainging obviously ). I don't have any spells? *all confused*

to get spells. you got to buy them first. you can go to any mage guild or any temple to buy your wanted spell. check on the spell description. it will say which skill the spell is in.

to increase the skill by the hard way. keep on casting it. example, like keep on casting healing spell.

We have a new gold dragon... 2500 posts, that's quite a lot

Kakero is perfectly right - just buy the spells you need. Remember every mage can teach you only a few spells, look for as many trainers as you can.
Also, some spells are unique (e.g. fortify skills) and can be gained only by quests or by raising in Telvanni / mage guild / temples ranks.

Training the hard way is long and tedious, considering that you will gain experience only when you can successfully cast - spellfails don't count. So I'd spend a bit of money in training to, let's say skill level 50 or so, at least.

I know, you get fortify skill by retrieving all the threads of the webspinner. But that was only an example - I am not that familiar with mages, no more examples came to my mind at that moment. Simply some trainers refuse to teach you sells unless you are important enough in their faction, and they must have something new, otherwise there would be no reason to. e.g. I have never seen a summon golden saint spell taught by a "normal teacher"

So, every time I want to cast a spell I have to have a scroll? There's no 'spellbook' thing where I can learn spells and cast them whenever I want?

Yes there is. But like said above, you gotta pay for spells, plus if you succesfully want to cast them, your skills gotta be high enough. You can still buy any spell though. Have you joined the Mages guild yet ?

You can learn spells from all sorts of sources. The most common places to find teachers are the Mage Guild halls, Members of House Telvanni, the Imperial Cult, and the Tribunal Temple. Some may require membership before teaching you a spell, others may require a certain rank in the organization.

Also, once you learn a spell effect (restore health for ex) you can speak to a Spellmaker to create a custom spell of your own choosing. You can mix and match effects, duration, strength, ect.

When you say 'teach me spells' what does that mean exactly? Do they teach me so I know how to cast it for always or is it just a one time thing? Johnny said you have to 'pay for spells' so I'm a bit confused. Seems weird that one of my minor skills would be a spell casting one yet I don't know any spells

There's so much that's different about morrowind to other rpgs I've played, BG and so on, wizardry 8, what with the exp/level up stuff, that I don't want to assume anything

If I buy a spell on a scroll, or find a scroll, and it's a restoration spell, is there a scribing into spellbook deal like in these other games? Can a wizard 'teach me a spell' (for a price) OR sell me a spell on a scroll or is that the same thing?

You can buy spells and scrolls:
No matter how proficient you are in a given magic school, you will start with no known spells. You have to learn them this way.
you buy a spell by clicking the Spells option in the conversation window, just like you do with barter. When you buy a spell, you will be taught how to cast it and you can cast it whenever you want, mana and spellfail permitting. To cast a spell, right click and choose the spell from the spell menu, just between the innate char abilities and the spells which come from enchanted objects.
Then ready the spell by tapping the r key and cast it with left click.

There is also the option of making custom spells, for a price: some spell teachers have the Spellmaking option: select that and make your custom spells. I cannot give you more detailed info on that, since I am no caster.

you can buy scrolls just like other object, by selecting barter. A scroll isn't affected by mana, spellfail or skill. It's 100% succesful, and can be used by any char. It is like a single use magic item, which is destroyed when used. Scrolls cannot be used to learn spells like in baldur's gate.
To use a scroll, right click and select the scroll from the spell menu, in the magic objects section. It is listed as scroll of ekash's lock splitter, for example.
Use scrolls like any other spells, r to ready, left click to cast.
