What do you mean by you need a thief for the playing? Do you mean an NPC? Or did you want advice on "creating" a thief PC to play yourself?

PS, Imoen and Montaron are the only half way decent NPC thieves I used in the game.

Imoen is among the best, and her level is one when you get her(!) - this is especially important for thieves, as you can then customise what skills they specialize in. For my case, I dualled her to a mage when she reached level 5, but that's another story...
Another good thief is Safana (she's on the light-house map, towards the west coast), if you can get her while your character is still around lvl 1 or 2 (since the level of the NPC depends on your own character level). If you want to enlist her, my advice is to tackle the quest she gives you with subtlety.
Coran, even though he's already quite high in level when you get him (around Chapter 4) is also quite good. I won't spoil the surprise for you, though .
To sum up, these were the thieves I tried while I was playing BG...

I agree with Mirror. Imoen is supposed to be a major part of the story anyway. And she did just fine when I played
