i put two in front, three in the middle, and one in the back. When i get in melee range, i turn them sideways and evereyone is in short range.

You could also have them facing forwards and have your rear characters use extended range close combat weapons like lances if some of you characters aren't and phiscially resilliant to enemy attacks as others so as to keep them safe from most harm and still be able to atack.

mine are all fighters--they started as bishops & now they berzerk all the time, so i get them the best swords i can find, and a bunch of dragon heaters (&light shield). So whose gonna get the most light swords? I got three...

You can also put two in the middle, two in each flank and no one in the front position and then when you meet an enemy all 6 will be able to attack short range.
That's what I do.

Actually, I put two extended range melee characters in the middle and two short range fighters in the flanks.
and my little bishop hangs out in the back spot.
