Im asking because Im thinking of getting the ones with the red wizards (possibly my favorite group) and I want to know are they any good. This is important because That Ed Greewood book Spellfire, I think it was called put me off them in a big way. Probably just Greenwood though and not the group of books.

It's just Greenwood. Anything by Elaine Cunningham (Elfshadow, Elfsong, Thornhold and Silver Shadows) is good, the Red Wizards book by Jean Rabe is good but not great, Masquerades by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb (about Alias, Dragonbait and Olive Ruskettle) is very good. I haven't read the rest as they're out of print! (unfortunately)

I very much like all the Forgotten Realms books, which include the Harpers series. The only books I thought were a little dodgy were ALL the ones by Ed Greenwood. His problem is that he doesn't take the characters he writes about very seriously, so you end up with them doing things which they wouldn't normally do (such as casually stripping off in front of loads of people). This helps undermine the 'suspension of disbelief' that such a book needs to engender. IMHO, anyway.
