There are plenty of pieces of wood lying around that area to be picked up. Are you saying that the game won't let you actually pick up that item? Hmmm.

The wood you need comes to you automatically when you destroy the third dam support in the far NW of the map. Unfortunately, you don't see any message that you have the wood. If you destroyed the support, look in everyone's inventory, as some party member must have it.

If you didn't destroy the support, go back and do that now.

Then when you get to the gap, just click on it and the wood will go across.

Magness, no, only specific wood is available to pick up.

NightOwl, thanks! I got it! But in another game (that I lost when I upgraded my pc) I picked up one that blocked the ford before getting to the or camp and the troll cave etc... so I thought I was lost til I got to the dam support!

Doh! I confused myself into thinking that you were talking about a different area.
