I noticed that a certain mage i had picked up ( Xan i think) could not memorize a certain sleep/charm type spell. IMO these spells are so much more important than Damage spells. I think i prefer the "enchanter" kind of caster. Which NPC fits this? My idea is that a mage should be a crowd-control type. I do not have Dynaheir but from certain posts i get the idea that she is a damage-dealer.

Will she be able to use enchantments? *sigh* i might have to end up using some trick to kick her and yet keep minsc from the party.. who do you recommend as a crowd-control? What about Quayle?

Dynaheir cannot cast spells of enchantment/charm or conjuration/summoning natures - she is an invoker.

I still think she's the best choice as far as mages go.

And Xan can't cast Evocation - he's an Enchanter

Xan, being an Enchanter, should CERTAINLY be able to memorize Sleep, as it's his own specialty school. Maybe he couldn't copy the scroll because it was already in his spellbook--are you sure he didn't simply fail his roll when he tried to write it down?

As far as 'crowd control' goes, the Enchanter sounds like what you want, and Sleep is a damn good spell against low-level enemies, like what you're facing now. Of course, later on you'll learn that the best way to control crowds is to kill them, but let's stick with the here and now.

Xan won't be able to learn important spells like Magic Missile, Stinking Cloud, and Fireball, whereas Dynaheir can't learn Sleep or another really good Enchantment/Charm spell that I can't think of at the moment.

And Dynaheir is NOT the best Mage in the game.

He is a bard. Bards can learn all kinds of mage spells, but they dont get as many spells as wizards and they cannot cast spells of level 7 and higher, but this doesnt matter for BG1.

Yeah, Shar-teel is the best mage in the game...

Making her a mage has almost everything to do with the Squirrel Goddess encounter.

Actually, Shar-Teel can't dual to a spellcaster until BG2, wherein she can Dual to a Cleric/Mage--VERY powerful, especially with Shar-Teel's THAC0. Of course, the class has its drawbacks.....but just wait until you get that 7th level Cleric spell, Shield of the Acorns!

Yes IMO, stat-wise, edwin is the best caster. Seems as though he would have the wide choice of spell-types too? The enchantment and the direct-damage ones? I am really unhappy with Dynaheir Xan i might give a try once with a good-party tho.
