I've heard quite a bit about the ship of Balduran, but I could never find it. If you have to talk to that mage who sends you off to that forzen asylum, then I'll just leave it a mystery as I can't stand going through all that. When I played with the TotSC expansion I wasn't really all that impressed. The only thing I liked was that spells like fireball and cloudkill only affected you if you were in the way instead of being hit when you're nowhere nearby. I never bothered much with Durlag's Tower either. After getting killed by a couple of demon knights who met me at the entrance I figured whatever's in there, it won't mind if it stays there, heh. Also the final battle was next to impossible. Without the expansion I was able to kill off Tazok and lure Sarevok out and take him on, but the expansion just sends the whole armada out even if they don't see you. If someone could give me some insight at to the Sword of Balduran I keep hearing about, I'm all ears. Spoil me, I don't mind as I probably won't venture after it anyhow. My philosophy was more or less that if its a magical sword I'll get it, if I'm gonna get turned to a grease spot getting it, I'll lie and say I sold it.

Can you return to Ulgoth's Beard from the ship anytime you want or are you stuck there till you get what you came for like with the frozen island?

No, there's only one way off the island and you have to complete the quest to find it

Durlag's Tower is something that you should try again at some point. Perhaps you might want to start a new game and include it when your party is at around level 6 or 7. Talk to the folks at Ulgoth's Beard about Durlag's but perhaps you should try traveling there on foot to make sure you avoid the fight with the demon knight at the start. Durlag's is really a great challenge, a lot of fun.

TotSC is an amazing add-in, Durlags is well worht doing again, but if you found the Ice quest hard, I wouldn't bother adventuring anymore, I'd just hang up your sword(just kiddin).
Durlags and the Balduran quest are both hard, but both rewarding. Give them a go!
