Hi,

I got bored at work and took my old BG2 disks out of the closet to give it a go.

However during the install process I got an error message, that the file AREA040A.BIF is corrupt, to which I did not pay much attention at the time. I should have

It appears that my CD2 had been damaged and now when I first go to the Slumms and talk to Gaelan Bayle, then the game hangs when we try to go to his "better place for such conversations". Apparently this is the area 040a that should be loading, but is corrupt.

I assume that this problem would go away if I could ged a new area040a.bif file from somewhere. Maybe someone in this forum would like to help me out?

The file is located on your CD2/data/ directory and is about 16,3 MB and can not be packed much smaller either, so e-mailig it is most likely out of the question, but maybe we can organise a direct transfer over MSN Messenger or I can provide you with an FTP upload slot?

Anyway, I hope maybe someone can find the possibility to help me out - I would be really grateful

Welcome to the forum Hull!

I experienced the same thing with another area once. Luckily I mangaged -after trying with three different CD-ROMs- to make a copy of the CD.

It seems that different CD-ROMs work a little differently, so if it does not work on your own it might do so on someone elses. Pherhaps your neighbour?

You could, however, try to copy the file directly from the CD to the right location on your PC also, if you have done the full install.

Different CD-Drives have issues with the BG2 CDs as well. You could always try to hook up a different drive to your computer (if your techies will let you....they may shoot you if you try that, I know I would). Failing that, try to burn a copy of the CD.

Those things are very picky, and it may work once, and not work 15 other times.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice, but I have already tried all that before turning to this forum

I have tried all the different CD-roms I could get my hands on and copied the area040a.bif file through them onto my computer (yes, I have Full Install), but the problem remains. I also tried to make a copy of the CD on another CDRW drive and reinstall the game using that, but I still got the CRC error during Install and the game still hangs.

I am not a very IT-distant person, but I really can not thik of anything else I could try...

So just in case someone is willing to help me out and upload me a clean version of the file, I have set up an FTP server on 212.47.209.217 with user Anonymous allowed.

Well, for some reason I couldn't upload to your ftp server.

I took the liberty of copying the file from my copy to the webspace my Internet Provider gives me (I hardly use it).

Not sure if the speed is gonna be good, but it's there if you want to try it.
