Sad

Oh, man! My hometown, Montgomery, AL is in the direct path of this monster hurricane! Good thing it's well inland though as the waves in the Gulf of Mexico off of Panama City Beach are reported at 50 feet tall!!!!!! I vacation in that area fequently and I jyst cannot imagine waves that large there!! On top of that- Winds of 100 MPH and 4 inches of rain an hour!

Still, the winds in Montgomery are expected to still be 80+ MPH went to hits there tomorrow night. Very scary and very dangerous!

Is it just me, or is this year's hurricane season particularly huge?

I think waves are measured as 1/2 above sea level & 1/2 below, so a 50-ft wave would appear 25 ft tall. Still a monster, but not *quite* as scary...

Edit: just remembered, it's the difference between the maximum height and the max depth of the trough that follows.

The hurricanes are crazy this year, so many more than usual! And now there is yet another, Jeanne. I really hope Ivan loses power when it hits land, and doesn't do too much damage in New Orleans or Alabama Chewbacca. I heard somebody call into a local radio station today, lived in New Orleans, and said they couldn't find a vacant hotel anywhere, they had to go to Dallas, TX to find a room, that far!

The say the closest comparision to Ivan's landfall is Hugo's landing at Charlestown, SC in the late 80's. That was ugly.

You are right Chewie (book mark me saying that ), this hurricane season is the worst in 30 years with 3 hurricanes, prior to Ivan, effecting the US. Normally by this time in the season we have averaged one.

Also, by this time the average is only 3 storms total with only one of those being major, and prior to Ivan there had been 5 with 4 of them considered major. Now we're 6/5.

Ivan is moving inland, and now another tropical depression is bearing down on Florida(Jeanne?).
