Download and run the symantech fixtool. If you had the virus, you no longer have the virus and will be pointed towards the patch.

If you didnt have the virus, you will still be pointed towards the patch.

There should be no need to turn your computer off on aug16, the virus is going to attack microsoft on that date so in theory turning infected computers off would make the attack less effective, but if you remove the vrius theres no reason to do so.

I think win9x has the same vulnerability, but the virus is only coded to take advantage of win2K and winXP. WinNT, win2K3 and win9x are all safe from this virus even without patches, although the same might not be true of the next variant to appear (there are three versions already) so patch them anyway.
