Default Help needed - Trip to LA

Hi All,

In April I will be in the LA area for a week before driving to Vegas. My mate & I want to stay in Santa Monica then head down to San Diego. What we are looking for is some cheap/moderately price accommodation in these areas.

Are there any hotel/motel chains that you could recommend that have good prices and clean rooms?

Also we are planning to hit up Universal Studios but other than that are there any must see places in those areas? Any good Pubs, clubs restaurants?

Best Westeren and Motel 6 are usually lower priced and are safe and clean. As for what to do there, I haven't lived there for many, many moons.

If there are any recommendations I would be sure to give a detailed report on my return.

So far Travellodge and Best Wetern Look to be the front runners in San Diego and Santa Monica.

We are also looking at heading across the border into Mexico for the day. Would you recommend driving or getting a tour bus?

Lady Blue lived down in SD for years, and I just saw her in another thread. She can probably give some good thoughts on the best way to see Tijuana

As for lodging, go to Orbitz and do a hotel lookup. You'll see a variety of decent hotels, along with a variety of prices. I personally try to avoid traveling where I spend as little as possible... that usually feels to me like an effort to be miserable in someplace nice. I just took a look on Orbitz, and found prices ranging from $50/night to well over $400. In general, I'd feel comfortable at any place between $75 and $125...

Remember that LA is huge, and has correspondingly huge traffic. It's worth it to spend a couple bucks more to stay near where you'll be that day (or the next).

Hello T D C Long time since I Posted or even dropped buy.
I was born and lived in LA the first 46 Years of my life. I Live in Virginia Now and have for the past 12 Years but Southern California is still where I consider Home.
1st -- Santa Monica is just a few miles West of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip. Be careful at night stay on the main drags--Hollywood Blvd -- Santa Monica Blvd-- Sunset Strip. Make sure you make it down to the west end of Santa Monica Blvd During the Day!! It Ends at The SANTA MONICA PIER at the Pacific Ocean. Walk South of it on the board Walk for a Mile then walk back to it (the Pier)and north a Mile and you will see some of the wildest People on this planet (the Street Performers the likes you will never see anywhere else on earth!!!) you will also meet people from every country just walking around seeing the sites. Oh and if it a warm day Babes on roller Skates wearing mostly nothing but a couple of Bandages. Its also a good place to eat there are may great restraints in that area Sea Food and Many many other places of all kinds of food.

2nd-- MEXICO --DON'T DRIVE unless you buy the day Insurance at the Border.
This is the most important thing you Must Have the MEXICAN DAY AUTO Insurance or you'll be in for it. The pore people down there like to jump out in front of foreigners and claim you hit them then the Police will take you to the Court House (a small rundown Building) and fine you 1000's of Dollars for being uninsured. If you don't have the money on you they take what you have and toss you in jail Labor camp at the rate of paying off the fine at $1.00 a Day. If you have the insurance you show it to the Police they tear off one or two of the tags on the bottom and send you on your way.
If you can find a Day Tour in San Diego To Mexico there are many (Take One) , and save yourself a lot of trouble And STAY with your group!! Being Mugged and having your throat cut is not my idea of a good day. As long as your with a tour group you will have a great time! Oh yeah Keep your Money and Passport in a Money belt safely tucked away or you may never see home again. last thing DON'T DRINK The Water or eat the Ice!!! In Mexico Drink Bottled Water or Can or Bottled Soda in Mexico. Getting a deadly Germ is the least of your problems if you do Drink the water I'll Send your family Flowers.

Have a great Trip and your going to love LOS VEGAS or as my friends call it Lost Wages. LOL as for Hotels in So.Calif. Best Western is Very Clean and still cheaper than most.

While your in LA they have computer Bars and coffee Bars where you can go in and for a few dollars you can use their computers and get on line to say hi. Also most people in California really like Aussies so feel free to talk to people (Students are safest) and they will help you with information as where to find great things to see and do.
