Wanting to replay Deus Ex: GOTY edition
Recently installed the game to relive old memories. Installs just fine, but occasionally the speach effects come out kind of garbled, and the running speed comes in jumps. Regarding the running speed, I mean the speed at which JC Denton runs. I seem to remember running being a relatively smooth action, but this time he seems to have to stop after each step and start moving again.
Is there a patch to make the game run smoother on newer computers, or some other solution?

Could you try lowering the sound hardware acceleration in dxdiag or something similar?
I had to do that in order to fix an issue I had with Ruins of Myth Drannor recently.

Truth be told, I haven't the foggiest idea how I would do that. One thought that crossed my mind is that this is a version of the game that came with my old soundblaster audigy card about 8 or so years ago. Is it possible that it is somehow incompatible with the newer directX? It comes with 7.0 for installation IIRC.

Run it in compatibility mode by right clicking the shortcut.

I'm pretty sure I did. Set it to Windows XP (Service Pack2), and everything. But I'll try again just to be sure.

There is a utility that might be useful - it includes an updated executable and config panel. |

2nd from the top, correct? I'll give it a shot. As well as the 98 compatibility setting.
On a side note: Is the "Visual C++ 2010 runtimes" mentioned here likely to be already in most computers, or will I need to acquire that?

The C++ is likely included - check the add/remove programs listing. There is a newer SP1 version of C++ 2010, though, available here |

On my old computer it was, but it seems my current computer is without. (Well, not anymore...)
Switching to the 98/ME compatibility solved the sound and jumpy running issues. But I think I may use the alternate .exe for it's other perks. Specifically, the ability to disable mouse acceleration. It's supposed to improve accuracy, but I've found it has the exact opposite effect for me.

Re: Wanting to replay Deus Ex: GOTY edition
Just had a random thought. Would the lack of the Visual C++ runtimes possibly be connected to System Shock 2, randomly crashing and not playing the movie clips, and the Theif games not functioning properly?
