Yep. I agree with all the points raised here. It makes SENSE for a Monk to have a staff. It makes NO SENSE for a Druid to use a Scimitar, and yes, a Ranger SHOULD be able to see and remove traps - but if he did, it would pretty well eliminate the need for a Thief, wouldn't it? And I LOVE the Thief class!

I thought robin hood was some sort of ranger/thief.

Monks should most definitely use a Staff. Traditionally Shoalin Monks (which this class is obviously based off of, I.E. Withering/Iron Palm) used weapons like Quarterstaff, Broadsword (Scimitar), Spear, Chain Whip, and other variations of those weapons. I personally think the monks in this game were jipped and are boring to play...in fact I think anything without casting abilities is boring as a main character in this game (hence the Fighter/Mage).

Well I think they should make the Monks into more subclasses. The Shao-Lin monks can fight with most things and other never touch a weapon at all.

The staff is a weapon most characters should be able to use from staff IMHO. It is a tool as much as a weapon and used for walking etc, sheepherders use it, wandrers, fighters that has to walk likes them too. Wizards of course...

Then the most obvious question regardin this would be how they fight with it. A monk that specialixes in it should get an extra attack since the techniques of fighting with a staff is really quick and dangerous in the hands of a profesional..

Well my 2 cents.

Not that I completely agree, but *I think* that the idea of monks using one handed weapons only is supposed to correspond to having an open hand to parry therefore reducing AC. Personally, I would rather take the sword blow on my stick than on my (iron, even) palm.

As far as Druids and scimitars, it seems that the Druid guy in the "Sword of Shanarra" books weilded a scimitar. This series was out, and popular about the same time 1st edition rules were in play (I think).

Who knows?

By golly gee willickers. I could have sworn the Shoa-lin monks were some of the most inventive creators of weapons that ever exsisted. Staves with blades on both ends. one being a sword the other something akin to a half moon axe blade.
I know the monks get extra move rate and extra attacks but if they have a weapon in their hand they only get 1 attack per round????? What a crock. Tell me Jackie Chan only gets one attack per round with a quarterstaff in hand compared to 5 attacks open handed. or Bruce Lee or Steven Seagal. What a CROCK.
Seems like the chinese invented alot of swords and things like sai's and tonfas but a monk cant use a quarterstaff??? Gimme a break
