I have a little question concerning the XP you get for finished quests/tasks:

does the way you finish a quest have any effect on how much XP (and award) you get when you report back?

thanks in advance

Sometimes, it depends on the quest. I'm pretty sure that there are no major losses/gains to be had by doing a quest the wrong way.

early game spoiler example:

Niles wants some wine in Targos. You can give it to him for 3 gold and 450 xp, or you can order him back to his post for 600 xp

Haha, lol, funny you just said that. See, I'm playing a new party, spellcasters and a paladin, and I'm Alt+Tab-ing to check the forums. And what do I see? A quest I've just finished before hopping here to view the board. Lol.
So yes, there are quite some quests in teh game that have different outcomes and rewards. Some even are connected to each other, some are doable only if you've finished seemingly unlinked quests before in a certain way(Monastery falls to mind).

I see. Does one always get more xp for doing it the "good" way, or can the "evil way" be more rewarding?

There are quite some quests that give better XP to evil characters(again, the Monastery comes to mind). Even evil classes gain cool benefits.

In Targos, the spirit in the inn can be done away with by returning a part of her husband's ship which will give you xp and a gem. Or, if you have an evil cleric, you can force her to give you an evil short sword that is quite powerful for the early game. I don't recall if you get xp for getting the sword or not.

Hmm... if I'm not mistaken, she gives you components for a dagger, not a short swords, and the dagger's powers(an it's weight) depend on how you finished the quest. I think the good dagger is better than the evil.

You can still get a better reward than a gem if you go the good path.

Talk to the innkeeeper regarding Koluhm Bonecutter and he will tell you that Koluhm just left, leaving a bottle behind. If you ask the innkeeper to see this bottle, he will give it to you. Now go to Nytharra (Ulbrec's wife), have it identified and then ask her about it. She will tell you that it's a ghost-touched bottle and that you might be able to obtain a tear from Veira (the ghost in the inn) in the bottle. You can now talk to both the innkeeper and tell him you've identified the bottle, and get some xp, and Koluhm (who appearantly didn't know it was a valuable enchanted bottle) for some more xp.

To obtain a tear from Veira, solve her quest by returning the part of her husbands ship, and then ask her for a tear. You can then take back the bottle to Nytharra and she will either pay you 500 gold for it, or make an enchanted dagger out of it. The dagger is called "Sorrow's Tear" and is a dagger +1, +2 vs. spectral undead, a +2 enchantment in regards to what it can hit and have an additional 5% chance of doing an extra 1 point of magic damage. It's only usable by good-aligned characters.
