Backstab not work everytime??

My thief have a x4 backstab, around 90 both in "Hide in shadow" & "Move silently", but he seems not succesfully backstab everytime, sometimes works sometimes not.

Does it need to be walk next to the target BEFORE you command the attack? Or does it need to be physically at the back of the target? I tried few times it seems succeed more often, but I'm not sure it's just a coincedience?

Well, I usually hid in shadow, then tip-toe my way behind the target, pause the game, and issue the "attack" command. Sometimes the thief will miss, but the body parts usually fly when it connects.

I think you indeed have to be physicly behind him

Just think a bit, you can be hiding in shadows but if you are in front of the guy ... Tell me how can he hide himself in front of the victim. Logic tells me that you must be in the back of the target to backstab or on the left or right of the person but not in front. The BG1 patch or the expansion SOTC did arrange this matter of backstab in the back only If I remember correctly .. They sure did it too in BG2
