Controvertial issue I know...but I know a couple of different parents who insist their children have ADD or ADHD and when I see these kids focused for hours at a time on their PS2 and Xbox I think to myself, this is bullshit, the kid can pay attention when he wants to, he just doesnt pay attention when he isn't interested...like in math class.
Anyway, anyone out there with real life ADD or ADHD experience? Is it real or just parents who wont discipline their kids? |

ADD its real, but that doesn’t mean there are not misdiagnosis out there, and in the example you give, video games have tons of different thing moving, colors and sounds, that works as a magnet for attention, I just wish education will take more ideas from them.

I'm not exactly sure what the problems derive from, but I know what you mean... these kids can concentrate, and I bet a lot of under-achiever's could do a lot better, maybe not fantastic, but better.
I think the problem isnot being ableto get things on a level of their interest, which could come from the parenting, or sometimes the teachers. Now I'm certainly not booing all teachers, many are very good, and many can get the interest there and teach brilliantly, but some teachers, they might be the very best in their field, but they just can't teach, there's a big difference, they can't seem to grasp how the child doesn't understand or isn't interested when they don't impart the knowledge well at all, and do it in a boring fashion. Good topic again Magik

Great topic, Magik.
I know I'll get flamed for this... IMHO, I believe that it is the doctor's fault. ADD is a real disorder, but there are some experts who believe that it is misdiagnosed in 99% of cases. Parents have gotten sold into believing doctor's diagnosis as gospel, and doctors they take the children to have become lazy. It so easy to call "ADD" and hand over a bottle of Ritalin. Mis-diagnosis and overly-prescribing medications are killing our children. In the US, our children's education rank abysmally LOW in comparison to the rest of the world. It's because parents have turned over responsibility to teachers and doctors, and they, in turn, pass the buck to each other. -RANT OFF-

Ah Magik... now you got me started....
My little theory is this: Since MTV and the Pepsi commercial of the quick clip editing came out, we have had epidemic cases of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)... why the collusion? The interesting instance that both occured at around the same time? We know that kids watch TOO MUCH TV. Because of that, their brains get used to the fragmented information that is now a program or commercial. For the older folks... remember what TV used to look like? Perry Mason or Father Knows Best? The cuts took a while and they prided themselves in films on going as long as possible on ONE CUT. Our society has also decided to coddle our kids and parents being either their kids "FRIENDS" or disinterested altogether... it is a WONDER why our kids can't pay attention. There is little parenting going on anymore (I know of several exceptions to this, thank goodness!) but take a look in a supermarket or a resturaunt sometime. The evidence is all around. The testing scores of kids is LOWER than it has ever been.... teachers are under the gun to get the scores up with kids who know that they can run wild. Our system isn't just sick.... It is lost. Mind you, that is basically in the States... things are different elsewhere. I have an issue with people who have kids who don't want them or don't parent. I do see good and bad... but the bad outnumber the good by far. Is it any wonder the rest of the world doesn't take us seriously? I fully expect to get hammered for this one... So, basically just the inability to concentrate on any one thing for long?

From add-adhd.org:

In a nutshell, it is a brain dysfunction that people tend to grow out of and/or cope with by the time they are young adults. It IS overdiagnosed, the treatment usually being Ritalin. One thing I've heard is that caffeine actually CALMS a hyperactive child down, because of differences in physiological functioning. BTW, Magik, the kids may look focused on the TV or a computer game, but think of how many moving images and different sounds they are being exposed to every second. And just because they are easily distractable doesn't mean they can't focus at all, on anything. Teaching strategies include helping students to regulate their own behavior in the classroom.
