Do you use and wich should you recommend?

Because I have Windows 98 Prof., ME, 2000 Prof. and XP Prof. here (got them from my work) and are running ME and getting seriously...Sick of it!

What are the downsides and plus points of the above stated versions?

This is my system.

Pent. III 866
384 mb workmemory
20 Gig HD (Upgrading that to 30 and 120 Gig)

This should be sufficient not..?

Thanks for the help guys!

umm....i don't know alot about the different OS's but i do know that 98 is the most stable for running games but most people find XP easiest to use. also installing drivers for 98 is a bastard (already had to re-install 4 times this year so i know)

Two choices. win98 dual booting with 2K, or win98 dual booting iwth XP pro.

ME is a disaster. A total failure. That said, it is better than win98 if you are lucky enough to get hardware it likes.

The core difference between 2K and XP isnt worth mentioning, the interface on XP is more user-friendly, but with a little work you can turn all that junk off. AFAIK there is little to choose between the two for gaming.

Both share the same problem - to gain their stability, they have to prevent programs accessing hardware at low level, enforce memory protection and several other things, all of which prevents old games running. Hence the win98 dual-boot. The win98 partition dosent have to be more than a couple of gig - most games run under XP, and those that dont tend to be smaller.

actually win2000 or winxp is more stable than 98

but if you do insist on having win98 then i would suggest getting the freeware rambooster at download.com... helps prevent the blue screen of death..

win98 and win2000 is good for your specs annatar.. i dont know about winxp since i havent tried it yet

Are their any nasty things I should know (except the spyware prob from Stormy)?

Because I want to try out XP for several reasons... but I have heard several horror stories about it.

I have WinME and have no troubles with it. It's on a 733 MHz, pentium 3, 128 or 256 mb ram, 20 gb harddisk. It's really stable and it's hard to make it crash (though possible when you let me write complicated NWN scripts)

My father however has the same, only 933 MHz and it crashes every couple of hours, or makes errors by which you have to reboot. I don't know what the problem is but I think it could very well be WinMe. First I had downloaded a WinME update and could format the day after.

I haven't had any other current versions of windows (last was 3.11) or any linux/lindows operating systems so I don't know what to recommend. I also don't know what the problem is since i use 1 without trouble and another with lots of troubles

it does have a habit of freezing up if you try to open more than 1 thing ata a time, for me as a multi tasker...that sucks
it does have good sides, like more owner controls than 98 or 2000 and it is a lot eaiser to get help if you need it
but it is more prone to be unresponsive
but plus side is the compatibilty wizard, if something is not safe, it will warn you before you try to instal it

Yeah, I have to agree, I have used Win3.1, Win95, Win98, Win2k and WinXP, and I have to say, I like XP. It has a great look, and its very easy to use. I say go for XP. One warning, though, I haven't used it for games really, but my friend has, and he says its fine. But that is on the word of my friend. But I say go with XP anyway.
