Yipe! I don't think BG games were written with windows xp in mind. It's too new. Try the software companies support site to see if there are any known conflicts with windows xp.

windows XP is not game freindly it was designed for business and collage
application get rid of it. Install windows 98 second edition or wait for windows 2002 to come out. I had XP and I couldn't play much of anything
every time I try to play any of the Interplay or Black isle games I own
it would cause the games to lock up or dump and restart like I hadn't just played for the past 4 hours so (GET RID Of XP) it even dumped a report I
had been working on for work for 17 days and I never did find it again. I
then went to the store and bought windows 98 second edition. I don't have
PC troubles anymore. Also "98"SE makes my Microsoft Office pro 2000 work
better than it ever did with XP. Good Luck

Your best bet is to email Bioware Tech support. Check www.bioware.com and see if they have any workarounds for Windows XP users.
