I cannot get my character with the eggs to place them on the floor on the grate. I have killed all the spiders, have the empty jars (I can't get them placed either), and am sure the press is fully withdrawn. What am I missing?

Just walk on in to the press. Right click on your egg, and select drop. I think with the jars you select use while then are in your inventory (not readied on your belt), and there is a blue target to use them on. Well that's what I would try .
