Lets hope the soldiers get in and out with the minimum of casualties, that not too many civilians get caught in the crossfire and that it is all over quickly.

Fingers crossed!

I wonder if they'll find al-Zarqawi there.

I'm dubious about them finding Zarqawi. Conflict needs a nemesis. One of the first things a lawyer learns about client management is that if his client has a nemesis on the other side of the table, the fees will go up. So, we create a nemesis. Why would you think politics works any different? Because real lives are sacrificed? Puh-lease, as if that *ever* mattered.

One thing is for certain, there will be many casualties if they put up a serious fight.

Can see the Black Watch boys copping a lot more very soon as well.

I have to seriously wonder if Zarqawi is still there. I'd think that he would have bailed out before the city was fully surrounded.

Regarding civilian casualties, I heard that approximately 80% of Falujah's population has already bailed out and is down to "only" 50,000 people. Hopefully, they can stay out of harm's way as much as possible.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it strange that the offensive only starts after the US presidential elections have finished?

This is of course IMO, but could it be that if they started the offensive before the elections that there would have been a different result? If yes then that would mean that the Bush administration put off liberating Falluja just for better chances in the elections.

I know I might be going a bit too far with suppositions, but I think it is an interesting train of thought.

Of course they waited, dplax. Can you imagine the Kerry Campaign and what it would have said about Fallujah. We don't know if Fallujah will take 1 week or 1 year from this point, bad politics to go in before now, old bean.

Now, I would think that any mortar-toting ululating virgin seeker in Fallujah would have also surmised this and vacated by now had they half a brain.
