How do I convert pictures/images from .bmp (example) to .jpg, or .gif? Is there a certain program I need?

Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or MS Paint can do that for you.

When you open it in paint, just save it again under a different name. On the savescreen there'll be a scrollbar which probably says something like "24-bit Bitmap (*.bmp;*.dib)". Change that one to GIF or any other format you need.

I'm an avid user of Photoshop 6, but I've found myself gravitating to PMView for my image conversion needs. As well as being an excellent image viewer (one of the best on the market) it's also a handy tool for image manipulation. Works good as a poor-man's photoshop.
Do a search on download.com for PMView.

There use to be a program called HiJaak that could change most formats into any other format. I think it only works on OS up to win98. I haven't used it in years though.
