There's some sort of file on our comp at home that is constantly changing the internet homepage, even when you reset it back to the normal page. This bug started happening after Internet Explorer crashed when i was on an emulator webpage. Anyway, it created a file called sys.reg and when i delete, the problem goes away except every time you restart the computer you get a message saying the registry is old or some other crap like that.

I think i know how to get rid of it, because it infected to other files called user.dat and sys.dat. I can find segments of this program in those texts, but most of it is in this weird text language and I don't want to accidently delete something important located in there. Any ideas???

I recently had this problem (like, yesterday), and my IE6 homepage got set to blazefind or something like that. It was from the JS/Seeker.gen virus.

That's also a common behavior of spyware. If you don't already have Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware, get them. They're both free.

Spybot: www.kolle.de
Ad-Aware: www.lavasoft.de

They can remove that stuff. If it is a virus, try Trend Micro (www.trendmicro.com) for a free on-line virus scan.

Anything can do this, but Spybot has a way of undoing it - in the 'Immunize' tab, uncheck the box 'Lock my homepage from being changed', and you'll be able to change it.

EDIT: Adaware can pick this up aswell, just scan the registry and it will pick up a registry value with the author 'Windows'.

Yep. I have most of my start settings locked down by Spybot.

It's kind of sad, really... I don't get nasties and varmints any more, and I rarely have things to clean up after. At least I've got kids...
