Please help me with homework assignment

I have to find an answer to this tonight.

"Given the health problem of binge drinking among college students, carefully and specifically explain three prevention programs that would be realistic with a good probability of success on college campuses".

Given the situation I see here on the campus, drinking would be really hard to stop.

Just an idea though:
-Do not let alcohol be brought into dormitorys. If students want to drink they could go into town. Controls to enforce it. Although I think students would find a way around this.

If it were not prevention I'd have much more ideas, but so it is a bit harder. Hope it helps.

How about disallowing groups of more than 3 students to be their dorms after a certain time (eg, 9 pm)? The basis for this would be that group studying is rarely that effective if the group size is too big, and the smaller the group, the less likelihood of binge drinking (less goading, challenging, etc.)?

Or what about a self-help group that encourages students with drinking problems to get together and kick off the habit together?

or of course, u can have the college do tests every few months to check students for alcohol in blood, and if they do have any alcohol, then suspend or even expel the students. That should set an example to every student to not to drink. [img]graemlins/hehe.gif[/img]

How about not admitting 18-22 year olds who are prone to binge drinking.

Instead, have a 0-4 year program called "live off of your parents and party like you're 18-22 years old", held primarily in Daytona Beach, FL and other spring break locations. You graduate from the program and attend college when you're no longer obsessed with binge drinking and have proven a serious intent to apply yourself to academics and drink responsibly. If you remain in the program >4 years you have to return home to live with your parents and spend the rest of your life working in menial service-type jobs (or just live off your parents, whichever they tolerate).

This way, higher education would be a privilege for those that truly appreciate it, and not just "what you do after graduating from high school."

Of course, this would only solve the problem of binge drinking among college students. You'd still have the health problem of binge drinking among adolescents and young adults, but that's a societal problem that will take major changes in parental attitudes, images seen in the media, access to alcoholic beverages, and peer pressure.

Sorry Larry it was tried back in the 1920's and failed miserably, there is no program to stop binge drinking.

Don't apologize to me, this is just an assignment to get a grade in class. I personally have no idea what goes on around campuses because I live 15 miles away in my own home.

Only way I know how to stop binge drinking is to seperate yourself for that kind of environment.

How about requiring freshmen to spend a weekend in a hospital emergency room watching the drunks who get scraped off the highway receiving treatment, or at least require them to view actual film footage of those kind of accidents?

1) Install breathanalysers on the doors. Students must pass the test to unlock the doors.

2) Open a Starbucks and promote it as the real thing.

3) Make lecturers join in the parties. You can't get a better killjoy.


On A More Serious Note:
--------

1) Kill not the party, but the thinking. Promote alternative types of drinks. If alcohol has to be a must, consider diluted cocktails instead.

2) Destroy the mentality that binge-drinking is cool. Display photos of people(ad actors) throwing up and generally acting/looking stupid in posters, with the message on what excessive alcohol can make you do.

3) This one is more specific. Posters warning females on what can and might happen if they get overly drunk.

It would be virtually impossible to eliminate the problem short of draconian laws, but it should be possible to reduce it.
