Is there a way to finish the Mae'Var quest for reward and full XP if you refuse to help Edwin, or does that permanently stick you? You'd think that ou could find proof somehow without having to help out mageboy, but I searched the guildhall from top to bottom and even picked half the NPCs' pockets and came up with nada.

Rather annoying, that.

Like Edwin told you, you need his key. If you don't do what he says, your only option is to assault or pickpocet him. The problem is, he'll run if you try to fight, so you'll have to find him somewhere. I don't know if that is possible, so otherwise you'll have to do what he says.

You can absolutely refuse to kill Rayic Gethras; for all the lawful or good people this task is, of course, first-degree murder, so why would you do it in the first place? This refusal will make Edwin attack you, meaning you can grab the key from his lifeless hands. Of course, picking his pockets will work, too. Remember--the true goal is to get in good with Renal, not Mae'Var.

The most distressing thing about practicing magic is the fact that even the most learned sorcerers cannot accurately describe what magic *is*....

Who are you? What do you want?
