And Hiero, of course they have a tremendous legacy, and it seems that their fall left Europe in the lurch for several hundred years (such was their influence). English is a Germanic language, not a Romance one, though we get some words from it and other Romance languages.

English certainly has deep Germanic roots, but it is also heavily influenced by the both the vocabulary and syntax of Latin. We wouldn't speak 'English' as we know it if not for Roman expansion.
