Kaz you lived in the states, for 6 years..you weren't even a teenager then were you? so who were you as a preteen discussing world events with? As a teen once my self I know that I didn't become "politicaly aware" untill mid-teens most kids in any country would know squat about anything outside their country. Too much fun and play to be had. This is not a flame, just an inquiry and a comment on the level of people you are discussing. I think you are just an exceptionally bright kid and may be suffering some for that.

It depends on the country, and on the people you are talking to. Some cannot afford education, and in some places, education is not available, or of a relatively low standard, as we would compare it in the West.

It is hardly fair to blame people from developing countries for their lack of knowledge about certain aspects of the world around them!

I think the point being made here is more relevant to people living in rich industrial nations who could know what was going on if they put even a fraction of effort into it, via internet and specialist publications, if not via populist television.

The question was about the WORLD not about only rich developed nations and as far as I could tell The PI and Puerto Rico had decent schools, the south east Asian countries I was allowed into I was only permitted to talk to a limited nnumber of military types and was not even allowed to know exactly which country I was in. If we are talking wolrd awareness here then lets include the world not just the reletivly tiny portion called europe. Lets also remember that europe only holds a fraction of the worlds population as well. Most of the countries there are smaller than some states in the USA, its a matter of scope. Knowing whats going on in California and in Maine while living in Oklahoma is covering more geography than say being in London and knowing about Hamburg.

Don't know where that came from or where I was going with it, but there it is.

not trying to take a shot here But I did once hear Rush Limbaugh make that quote but do not recall who he attributed it to.

I got the impression from the news reports in the country and the teens (I agree, kids aren't exactly reliable) and some adults I talked with - I was a bit surprised at people not finding Europe on a map. This is also the impression that my parents got from the people they met, if I remember correctly. To make it clear that I am not American bashing, I would like to add that the Americans we met were very nice people and I wish I'd met as many here in Germany

I don't know how Kaz will answer this, but I, as a pre-teen discussed events such as this with my family and their friends. Of course, I was "allowed" into older people's conversations because my father expected me to "behave like an adult" at age 8. His military involvement probably had something to do with his interest in educating his child as to world events. We also talked about the whole world in Social Studies in 6th grade or so on up. I had to take a class called "Current Events" in 9th grade, etc., etc. I know it's probably rare for kids to start out that young, but it DOES happen. Especially when the parents are aware of the need to educate youth. I think my father went a bit overboard with me, though. (That's why I just NOW having my "childhood" !)

*Cheez Whiz, but people are getting quick today. I was apparently typing the same time Kaz was. Thought she might be off in the cafe and take a while to get back. One day, I'll learn. *

Yeah, that's my problem. I've heard it so many times, from so many people, I can't remember anymore who is attributed to originally. (Sweet...something ELSE for me to research! )

Kaz, I don't think anyone should doubt your impressions, as you are demonstratably intelligent and thoughtful. Actually, the "kids" contributing on this forum are often more clear and logical than the "adults". Your maturity shows in your perspective.
For what it's worth, among industrialized nations, American schoolkids score lower on average than children from other countries in tests on world geography and history. I hope that will change over time, as our current administration has pledged reform in our school system.

Yes, I would totally agree with you. However, you do kind of lead the pack, wouldn't you agree? When you sell weapons to a country or countries, surely logic would dictate that there's a good chance that they'll use them against you. What do you want?

I'll make the point yet again, about bin Laden. (sigh...)

He and his group WERE ARMED AND TRAINED BY THE CIA AND MI6 TO USE AGAINST THE SOVIETS IN AFGHANISTAN. I repeat, bin Laden and his group were armed and trained by the CIA and M16 to use against the Soviets in afghanistan. bin Laden and his group were armed and trained by the CIA and MI6 to use against the Soviets in Afghanistan... and again..........

I must say, you seem to be quite selective in the points you reply to.
