There is a clearing near the half way of the river between the lake and the "upper lake". The raptor is there.

Notes:
1. There are two eggs available. One is dropped by the raptor, one is lying on the ground.
2. The raptor is spawned only if you have the quest. Every time you get the ranger quest, a new raptor will be spawned.
3. The egg survives reset advantures.
4. Any egg of a raptor will do. You can collect some in Brimloch Roon, inherit them from game to game and make the rangers quest really easy.

Therefore, embark on your raft and travel to the clearing.

Clearing up on what Radek said, the raptor is in a clearing on the left bank of the river on the way to Toad Village. The raptor won't appear until you accept the ranger quest.

And like other things, there's no guarantee the raptor will drop an egg when it dies. So you might consider stealing the egg from it during battle. Increase your chances, eh?

I think you're right as well. They seem to drop eggs more often than crabs drop shells...
