You can't.........yet!

You don't get 3rd level spells until you reach 5th level!

Spell levels and character levels DO NOT directly correspond to one another.
Here's the table of mage spells, sort of:

Mage Level_____Spell levels available (# of spells)

lv.1___________lv.1(1)
lv.2___________lv.1(2)
lv.3___________lv.1(2),lv.2(1)
lv.4___________lv.1(3),lv.2(2)
lv.5___________lv.1(4),lv.2(2),lv.3(1)
lv.6___________lv.1(4),lv.2(2),lv.3(2)
lv.7___________lv.1(4),lv.2(3),lv.3(2),lv.4(1)

P.S. this list is not complete I need to find my ToTSC manual then it will be more accurate.

If you have a game manual read all of those very VERY helpful tables in the back. The spell progression tables are on page 140. Also, there three jewlery items in the game that increase certain slot levels for mages, and one item for Clerics/Druids. Edwin has one, but it cannot be removed from his body, then there are two 'Rings of Wizardry' (depending on your version of the game), then there is one, maybe two 'Metaspell Amulets'. Oh, and the item for clerics/druids is a ring called, 'Ring of Holiness', or something to that regard.
