Yes the timing could be better.

And yes, they MAY allow what they called "conditional inspections" (which seems pretty darn fishy).

But WHY wasn't this taken care of when we were there in Kuwait? It would have made sense then. Everything in one fell swoop. I was there. He ticked me off royally by setting those wells on fire. Bah.
Remember the Highway of Death? That was a big turning point in the politics of the Gulf War. Seeing all those retreating soldiers killed in column after column didn't play well with the media and certainly not with our Middle Eastern allies who were "certain" the original objective of ejecting Iraqi troops from Kuwait had been liberated.

Bush bears some (but not all nor even the majority of the blame) for wanting to end the war in a tidy/low death toll fashion as well.

The real problem was getting the UN to act to back up it's threats after we'd "geared down" from war mode.

Saddams son, i believe his name is Udai or something like that, is supposed to take over the country when Saddam steps down. And believe it or not, from what i've read about this guy, he's even worse than his daddy. He was arrested for the murder on a prostitute a few years back, but what Iraqi judge is gonna convict Saddams son ? He is some kind of gangster with influence in just about any sector: prostitution, alcohol, gambling, drugs, etc. How's that for a muslim ?

Dirt cheap? Maybe not for long...

Yamani: oil may hit $100 a barrel

Sheikh Yamani, the former head of Opec who terrorised the West with threats over oil supplies in the 1970s, returned to the fray yesterday when he warned that the price of crude could triple to $100 a barrel if there is a war against Iraq.

His comments contributed to another torrid day on financial markets, where shares tumbled. The FTSE 100 index closed down 68.3 at 3,671.1, a level unseen since December 1995.

In an interview in a German magazine DM Euro, Sheikh Yamani - who is now retired as Saudi oil minister but still close to the ruling family - said Saddam Hussein could fire chemical weapons at his neighbours if he was attacked.

"And if that's the case, you can expect a triple-digit oil price. It could rise to $100 if the flow of oil from Kuwait and Saudia Arabia is turned off."

The benchmark price of a barrel of crude rose 12 cents to $29.25 yesterday, still below the $40 a barrel it reached during the Gulf war. But analysts are increasingly concerned that it will continue to rise.

Last night Alan Greenspan, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, declined to come to the market's rescue. US interest rates were left on hold at 1.75 per cent.

From what I understand - yes, he has been in violation of many UN agreements. And no, he is not a nice guy.

But why now? The timing just seems so suspicious to me.

Why not last year? Or the year before?
Why are we acting now, and haven't already?

It seems like a diversionary tactic considering our economy and our present search for Osama.

Sure he has weapons, but no way to launch them.
Charean, For the timing what is wrong with the timing of right now. If it is because of it's an election year then anything that is done said or proposed MUST also be subject to that logic. The only way to stop that would be do abosulty nothing at all in an election year, no action on any front what so ever. But then if we do that then we could apply the same logic to anything done in the year before the elect, since we are no longer doing anything during the election year, and the year before the election would be the only time our elected officals could do anything in order to get re-elected. So now we're left with NOBODY being able to do anything , because it would be only inorder to be elected, or re-elected. Then we would have a government that does nothing we elect it to do.

Osama is buried in a cave, if he was still alive he would be all over the news with his videos showing the world that the "sons of Satan" hadn't touched him and he's protected by Allah.

We have about 7,000 troops in Afghanistan, that is nothing compaired to the amount of troops we have.

11 Sept,2001 is the reason we are getting ready to kick Sodamn Insane out, Until that time we were not under attack (at home). We also have a president that has the will to do what is in the best interest of the country, and not talk about it after he was caught getting his "bobbin nobb'ned" on the job, at the office, not in his private residence.

ICBM's are not the only way to deliver Nukes. Shipped in pieces parts in diplomatic pouches to the Iraqi UN embassy (sp?) would work just as well. Loaded on a ship would work also. Remember where there is a will there is a way.
