What! That is rediculous! What if they got bad service? I know some places, legally, have a mandatory percentage added to the bill for the gratuity on large tables, but the customer is always right, period. I worked in the business for 10 years from dishdog to manager, and if there was ever a reason the customer was not happy, there would a discount, not a mandatory tip!
And, BTW, did the customer know it was mandatory before ordering the food? Something is wrong here.

From my experience, a restaurant that charges for a mandatory gratuity for larger tables will state so in the menu. The place i used to wait tables in charged 20% for parties of 8 or more. Might seem unfair, but it makes sense, cause it takes a lot from a waiter to have to deal with such a large table.

It's for real. Happened up in a resort town (where my husband and I spent a long weekend not that long ago!) and apparently the owner says he doesn't go after people most of the time, but this group was rude and obnoxious so he was making a point by pushing the charges.

Giving a tip should be up to the customer. Not for the restaurant people to decide. Maybe they should should give service charge like in some other country. This may save lots of trouble and confusion.
