Sure Stormy it was the Blue eggs and the Alien Hackers who did this right LOL.

Questions to help you out.

1. Do you connect through a router (if so what brand)

2. Can your other comupter connect to the net with no problems ?

3. Whenever I have problems with IP address I drop down to a MS-DOS prompt and type in ipconfig /renew (this should the PC a new IP address from your router)

edit> nope, this is the message I got while trying that.

What kind of network do you have? And what kind of net connection?

The computer is trying to get an IP from somewhere. The ideal case would be a DHCP server in the router. If you have a router, try resetting it.

Otherwise, windows will try and sort things out on its own. And personaly, I'd rather let a small child sort it out than windows.

Far safer is to specify static IPs for each computer. The numbers you need are:

A unique IP for each computer. There are various ranges set aside for LAN use, of which the one you probably want to use is 192.168.0.0 through to 192.168.255.255. That gives you addresses of 192.168.0.0, 192.168.0.1 and so on. Standard is for the router to be on the last usable address in the subnet, which is 192.168.0.254.

The subnet mask. Use 255.255.255.0 with the first range I gave above.

The default gateway should be the IP of the internet. connection. Either the inside IP of the router, or the IP of the PC using Internet Connection Sharing, or whatever.

EDIT]
http://www.hometownohio.com/faq/files/WinsockXPFix.exe

Comes up as a possible fix for that error message.

The numbers go in the TCP/IP properties for the connection.

Go into the network settings screen, its under the start menu, then settings. Find your internet connectin. Bring up its properties. Network tab. Select the TCP/IP protocol. Properties. Put in the numbers.

But, I would try that fix in my Edit first. Its easier.

it is not the internet that is the problem, it was the network we had setup between our 2 computers
