I am using a paladin, a fighter/cleric, a cleric, a bard, a mage, and a fighter/thief. This gives a good balance of healing, offense, tanks, sneakiness, and people skills.
Given the usefulness of bard songs in HoW, I just had to have a bard. The bard is my pickpocket (not that there are many people from which to steal in IWD) and my thief (at 7th level) has 85% in find traps and open locks. NobleNick (anyone heard from him lately?) had a thread asking whether he should use a fighter or a paladin; I chose paladin over fighter because I almost never put more than ++ in any weapon anyway (I like my fighters to be generalists). Many people here have recently been extolling the virtues of druids in HoW, so you might look into creating one of those.

Depending on whether on you want specialists or multi-skilled characters, you might try something along one of these lines:
Specialists: Paladin Dwarf fighter / 1/2 Elven Ranger Cleric Druid or Bard Mage Thief Multi-skilled: Paladin Dwarf fighter Fighter/Druid Ranger/Cleric Fighter/Mage Fighter/Thief It also depends on whether you are playing IWD only, or the full IWD/HOW/TOL on higher difficulty levels as to what you might choose.

Me Personally:
Paladin Ranger Thief Druid or Druid/Fighter Cleric/Mage Mage Perfect balance of Meat Shields/tanks and spell casters. Everyone but the Thief can Cast spells and you have three good fighters with the Thief backup fighter to protect the mages...and at higher level, you have four people who can heal you, AND you have access to all the spell classes so you can always try to have the right spells ready. MHO, of course... BK

Heh heh, I know how easy it is to think "How could I make my game better?". But seriously, any party that has the basic fundaments (Ie: some sort of fighter, cleric, thief and mage) will suceed admirably. Don't stress out about what characters to include. The fun of the game is all in your own personal input and creativity. These games are designed for your pleasure, they should never involve work or stress of any kind
And that's my two cents |

I've always liked smaller parties. Right now I'm taking through HoW:
Dwarven Fighter Half-Elf Fighter/Druid Elven Fighter/Mage/Thief Gnome Cleric/Illusionist ... though in retrospect, it might have been better to have the Dwarf be a Fighter/Thief and the Elf be a Fighter/Mage. The lack of a Bard bothers me a little. I really like how the bard songs helped my previous mid-level party (Paladin, Thief->Mage, Bard, Ranger/Cleric). However, having three fighters (out of four) makes up for that loss quite a bit. Thieves are a lot less necessary in IWD than they were in BG2 (my previous addiction), but with the 3E "Sneak Attack" and "Crippling Strike", they're more fun & realistic. I like Fighter/Thieves. Gnomes are cool, too. Illusionists are more restricted than they were before HoW, but Clerical spells do a lot to make up for both their lack of Necromancy and Abjuration. Druids! I love Druids in HoW. A Fighter dualed to Druid would rock so hard. However, unless you have the patience of a saint, it's too hard to roll one, so take a multiclassed F/D instead. Specialist Magi have really been knocked back a ways in HoW, so if you take one, you'll still need a full normal Mage (or a different specialist) to be able to cast the full range of spells. Conjurers, my old favorite, are now worse than Enchanters. Therefore, take at least two specialists, or at least one regular mage multi-class. Rangers and Paladins have greatly improved spellcasting, but I still like Fighter/Druids and Ranger/Clerics better, respectively. Hope this has helped. -- Nifft |

The party I have is kind of simple, but it works pretty good. I use 2 paladins, a Cleric/Ranger, a Magic user, a Fighter/Mage, and a Thief.

The Gnomish Cleric/illusionist is cool because he can wear a "gomes and halflings only" helmet that keeps him from ever getting tired. (very cool when casting Haste)
The Half-elf Cleric/Ranger is arguably the most powerful class as they get most Clerical and Druid spells (but not ALL); have an extra attack when no shield is equipped, and gain a +4 when attacking their 'racial enemy' (best to choose some form of undead; i like skeletal) A Fighter Dualed into a druid is cool (should have HoW installed); but as stated, the stats need to be real high. I'm trying one right now with a Dex of only 11. However, there's a 2nd level spell that raises dex as high as 20; so no worries. Bards rock in HoW as well. After a certain point they max out and just sing that same old song over and over. Early in the game, however, they are powerful masters of the 1st and 2nd level spells. A Druid and Bard are good to have on a team together. There really isn't much descrimination between the races except for a few items. mostly it's "humans only" or "elves only". Half-elves can usually use both categories. There are a few "dwarf only" and "halfling only".. but not many. |
