I want to, but but but but I gotta hit the sack soon! I'll do my best though to keep neglecting my primary obligations and keep spending way to much time here!

Don't feel bad Ladyzekke, just think of it like this - Here in San Diego it may be sunny all the time but my electric bills went up 400% and the average price of a home is $225,000- $250,000. The cost of living in the sun I suppose. Needless to say I live in Govt. housing because I can't afford to buy a home out here.

Turbovee - The house prices are the same here. $250K is the minimum. And we're at the 150K pricerange! Doh! Of course, you're right, we don't have the electric bill problem, but natural gas and oil prices are unbelievable!

Oh that's right I forgot about heating oil. really $250k in Virginia?

well maybe you do need to move out here to california

If you like the country, houses are cheap when you go about 30 miles into the mountains here.

turbo:HEATING bills...oh yah, natural gas has skyrocketed out this way. I shudder to think what my next bill will be. LadyZ must have similar pricing and their winters are cold enough!

Stealth: Yup I was madmadmad and not going to take it anymore! That was only one of the many problems with building...sigh

LadyWendy- I hope more people give their good/bad stories for you. You can see it will work out! Anyway, here is your very own single place to tell us what happens in the quest for housing.

Hey Guys!

Well, Just before we got married we kind of started looking for a house or an apartment on the north side of Knoxville, in a community called Fountain City.
We found an old house that was built back around 1920. It was a two story with 5 bedrooms, a kitchen, formal dining room and a living room. for $39,000 (it needed lots of work, but it was in a good section of town). The bathroom had a claw foot tub in it with one of those ring like shower curtains. The heating system used to be coal but was converted over to gas. Hardwood floors through out. Had big built in china cabinets in the dining room (lots of glass). The kitchen would have to be completely redone, but the cabinets could be salvaged. They were all glass fronts. It had all this old wallpaper through out the house that reminded my of Miss Kitty's saloon on Gunsmoke. It was really neat. Not a single room had a closet. When this house was built every room had a wardrobe. My wife and I had were slobbering to go buy antique wardrobes. We had an contractor come out and do an estimate for us to see what it would have cost to get the place fixed up and surprisingly it was about $8000 (that was us doing wall paper and paint). I called our realtor the next day day and offered $32,000 for the house. She contacted the house owner who happened to be the son of one of the sisters who owned the house (they were both in a nursing home), and he said that he would think about it and give her a call the next morning. She didn't hear from him for two days. Then she called him back. He told her he sold the house for $25,000 CASH. Two women bought it. We were needless to say devastated. The two ladies did a magnificant job at restoration. It is a show place. I see it everyday has I drop my son off at daycare. At the time it would have been a huge house for us, but not now with two kids. I will always remember that house. The one that got away.

We ended up in the same area of town a couple of years later, but this house has no charactoer like the other did. it was built back in 1970 and really isn't that good of a house. We weren't told about a lot of problems when we bought it and the inspection didn't catch a lot of things either. We replaced our kitchen floor, our bathroom floor, and the heat pump in the first four years. We also have aluminum wiring (bad news).

The next house MUST be either brand new or completely gutted so all the problems are fixed at once. Oh and it must have a flat yard. We live on the side of a ridge. Great view of the Smoky Mountains, pain in the ass to mow though (good workout, I must admit).

Ladywendy, have you all looked at Maryland or even further out in VA like Fredricksburg?
