A Long Journey
Since IW has undergone a rebirth, I decided I would give an update of my own.
As most of you know, I have a chronic illness that has resulted in several hospital stays and 7 major surgeries over the last 17 years. I've also been given Last Rites twice (1997 and 2008). Since my last two surgeries (Jan 2008), I've not been able to find a full time job. I did substitute teaching last year and began taking classes to get my teacher certification. Two long, hard years later, my efforts have paid off. I recently got a part-time job working as desk clerk at a local hotel (first steady paycheck since 01/08) and I finally received my teaching license today. I AM NOW A FULLY CERTIFIED MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER! It's time to break out the Barbarian Happy Dance

Re: A Long Journey
I know the struggle with chronic illnesses. It sucks, and makes everything you do three times as hard to do. So CONGRATS man, that is awesome!!!

Re: A Long Journey
I am glad to hear you made it to this milestone. I've been advised to go into teaching (Spanish) but I don't think I would make a good teacher. There has to be a level of patience involved that I have somehow misplaced and cannot find.
Hey, that's gotta feel kinda wierd to have cheated death twice. Ever seen those movies?

Re: A Long Journey
Nice one there Cerek, congratulations and welcome to the league of teaching May your classes be forever engaging and your students likewise inspired!
I'm an english/humanities high school teacher myself. (since 2008) However as yet, I've not yet been able to break through into the profession with a full-time position. Like yourself, I've done alot of CRT (casual relief teaching) and fill-in work, but lately it just hasn't been enough...and so the demons of under employment continually seem to haunt me. But I think I'll try to take some perspective from your story, not get too discouraged and keep at it. Great to see Ironworks back again, too. I was getting worried for awhile there when my google searches were all seemingly in vain!
