Oh I sense this is a difficult one. Have I been smacked? Yes, plenty of times. What did it teach? Well as I child I was scared out of lil mind not to do bad things again. So in that respect it worked.. but is it right to smack children and if so in what circumstances?
LOL I don't have any children of my own but I wanted to see what the folks of Ironworks think about this issue.

I'd never smack my children, I got a few smacks as a child myself and the only effect it had on me was to make me dislike my father even more.

For dicipline, in extreme cases, maybe. For lesser cases, forget it.

nope. There are better ways to teach/punish children. I believe you should not hit them at all.

Agreed fully with andrewas. As a last resort, and only when nothing else has worked. There are more effective ways of behavior modification other than corporal punishment (and I'm not talking about the touchy-feely psychological mumbo-jumbo either, I mean things like time out, grounding, removal of privileges, etc.) Only when all else has failed should corporal punishment be used, and not in anger...people forget in the heat of anger how much larger and stronger they are compared to a child.

Of course not, violence doesn't solve anything.

Don´t hit the smaller ones, ever!

Better ways to deal with it. I might grab and shake but not violent if I need to stress point, but as Saz said, never ever in anger!

What do kids learn about a smack or even more violent lessons?
Thats that how to raise a kid when they have one?
Do they learn respect?
No that breed fear.

Never hit or smack children!
