i loved darklands, most reviewers thought there was no plot but thats cos they never played it through, you need to go a year in game time before you get near the main plot but its worth it, totally immersive game just had too many bugs and crashed on me all the time at crucial points so least games these days when released are stabler and bugfixes you can download so in that respect recent games are better, as for plots and storylines, its a bit hard to be original these days esp with the resources on the internet, its all been done before, all thats left now is to do more of it, look at morrowind, thats a superb game and no text based adventure game comes close, though i loved them at the time. The new games are better than the old but theres still some old ones that i'll play because they can still cut it (darklands has terrible graphics but the gameplay is so good )

and who thinks ff7 is the best in the series? my favourite by a long way, better than the more recent ones and better than the older ones though i liked those too, final fantasy 7 was just so much fun, a great plot too which just kept unravelling and some superb sub games in it, the bike racing one and snowboarding one (i think, might have been skiing) kept me playing in their own right

Did you ever play Xenogears? A lot of people feel that it is one of the all-time best RPGs, partly because the story is so unique. I think this series is one of those exceptions you are referring to, don't you? The story AND the graphics and music are excellent, and I expect that Xenosaga will be even better.

yay, another FF7 fan. that game rocked. i played for so long i had like 4 or 5 gold chocobo's and all i had left to do was defeat the ruby weapon and level my chars up to level 99. i've played well over 500 hours on that game alone.

Chocobos rock!

the graphics weren't all that great, but the gameplay was very fun, in a micromanaging kind of way (similar to the civilization games)

ah see bruce i only ever played it on someone elses playstation and i made to level 50 something so i dont know so much of it, but what i did see was awesome and what i heard made it seem like i still had 50 percent of the game to go i was going to play a ps1 purely to play ff7 on, but im waiting now for ps2 to come down in price, buy that, buy ff7 for cheap then go to my local cheapo 2nd hand games store pick up loads of 5 quid ps1 bargains and use my ps2 as a predominately ps1 games platform with fast save/load times and dvd player too probably never bother getting ps2 games for it at 40quid a pop.

I've heard a lot of great things about it, and those things have been confirmed by people I've met around here.

Also, FF7 was my least favorite of all the FFs, but not because of its story (which I liked). Check out the polls forum thread "Favorite FF Character" to see my views on it.

Xenogears does have one of the best stories in rpg history for sure..

But one annoying thing about the game is how slow the text goes when you are talking to people.. It painfully writes itself out and you cant sidestep it you have to wait for it to finish.. arg.. slow... slow.. boring.. me....

Final Fantasy 3 (yeah yeah 6) was definetly one of the greatest rpg's of all time.. Broke the mold.

Another great rpg from the old days would be Faxanadu on the old nintendo. Fun fun.

Are rpg's from the good old days better? Well it seems like alot of them are classics thats all.. and definetly some of the new ones will become just as classic..
