I never really gave this much thought before, preferring sorcerors or general wizards, but what exactly is the benefit to being a specialist mage? I know that it prevents you from using spells of a specific school but does it boost spells of your own school?? or is it simply an easy way of distributing your feats in the beginning?

I think you get a bonus spell slot each level for specializing, sort of offsets the not being able to learn or even cast, in some cases, other spell schools. I never specialize, no point in it that I can see.
