I'm not sure if anyone else has tried this but here is how I set up my party:
*My whole plan takes into account the Exp. point cap*
1. Paladin
2. Cleric Elf
3. Bard 1/2 elf
4. Mage (Dual Class: Fighter first til 9th level)
5. Druid (Dual Class: Fighter first til 9th level)
6. Thief (Dual Class: Fighter first til 6th level)

Note that I basically started out with 4 fighter types, a cleric, and a bard. This has worked GREAT since my Mage has about 120+ Hitpoints. The levels at which I changed over were specifically planned. All my dual classed characters will reach the same Max levels as if they were single classed. Check the Exp. pt. charts in the manual. There is very few Exp. needed to reach 9th level fighter as compared to a 14th level one.

Also note, my druid is able to wear Plate Armour and cast spells. At first it looked like my Mage was going to be able to cast spells in Plate Armour, but as soon as I put a shield in his hand in stopped letting me cast spells and would not revert. But then all you have to do is pause the game and switch their armour.

P.S. I read on the forum that there is no drawbacks for having a low INT & WIS. This is not completely true. I have a Fighter/Thief (Dual Class) with a 3 in each and he keeps getting lost when trail blazing.

I think the last statement would not be completely true because I had a Bard with 18 for both abilities and he also always got lost. The reason why I'm saying this is that I placed him in my last slot for characters and this would cause him to walk into the other Characters which made him choose another route. So I think your problem with the Thief always getting lost lies in the factor that he is in the last slot.
