Hello everyone!

Dying Sun has been updated. Please see below for information:

www.deepdarksea.com/ds.htm

Dying sun is a completely new, 100% originally programmed computer role-playing game. It features an overhead view, with a perspective similar to that of the old Phantasy Star games for the Sega Master System & Sega Genesis. It draws inspiration from the Phantasy Star Series and the Fallout series.

It is set in the year 2038; you are an American hydroponics specialist aboard the US orbital platform Rhea. When communications with NASA cease unexpectedly, the Rhea is thrown into a state of panic. Finally, after 6 months, with supplies running low, the Rhea has no choice but to attempt to send a ship to Earth to determine the cause of NASA's radio disappearence. Unfortunately, there are no ships suited to the task of reentry; the only craft even remotely capable is the DSEP (Deep Space Exploration Pod) which may or may not survive the heat generated by reentry.

Assuming you survive reentry, your job is to try and find NASA, and see if you can determine the cause of NASA's radio disappearance. The Beta represents about 40% of the entire game, before you acquire a boat to traverse to other parts of the world. The Beta should give about 12-15 hours of game play.

The game is not crippled in any way, and there are no nag screens. Should you choose to continue with the remainder of the game, there will be a $10 registration fee. You may carry your save game over from the Beta to the full version. Work on the Beta is nearly finished, and the full version of the game will probably be out in October, depending on how fast I get it done!

What makes Dying Sun different or interesting?

Dying Sun incorporates a number of features that I think help the game experience and lend to the versimilitude considerably:

* true turn-based combat
That's right.. never thought you'd see one again, did you? True turn-based combat. No "phase-timed" , no cute little action bars to click on, no mad button mashing - here, you have a chance to contemplate your strategy, to use meta softs, weapons, usable items in battle, all carefully and coldly calculating your enemy's weaknesses and your own strengths before attempting to turn your foe to a greasy stain. There is NO option for real time combat; this is an old-school CRPG with fresh ideas, so if you're looking for Diablo, this is not your game! This is a thinking man's (or woman's) combat system ^.^

* Persistent corpses in battle, with blood effects.
There are over 100,000 possible "flavor text" permutations for a successful strike. Instead of just an enemy that blinks when hit and disappears magically when slain, you get to see the blood fly, and see the mangled corpse. I've designed unique corpses for every monster in the game.

* original sound effects
I've developed over 100 unique sound effects for the game; in battle, a monster may utter one of over 30 unique pain sounds - some of which are rather humorous. The hero also has about 15 different pain sounds, and special "death" messages also.. when he kills a foe, you'll often hear him laugh derisively.

* Journal with bestiary
For each monster in the game, there is a detailed physiology, combat, and resistance file. You will only be able to access these logs by raising your lore skill. You also have a quest log, to help you remember what you are doing. A journal keeps track of any handwritten notes you find. (Yes, handwritten - I've scanned about a half dozen or so notes that I wrote myself in.)

* Secondary skill system
There are 6 secondary skills that you can raise throughout the game, and affect your character: Lore, Haggle, lockpicking, pistol skill, exotic weapon skill, and regeneration.

* Perks
As in the Fallout series (from Black Isle/Interplay) , you can select from a number of perks for your character. These give small bonuses, and can sometimes be the difference between life and death. You acquire more perks every 3 levels.

* Detailed dialogue system
Your character has a distinct personality, as do the people you encounter. You're not going to find any "Welcome to Homeland!" characters, here - some may not like you, some may be suspicious, some may welcome you with open arms. There are a wide range of individuals, too.. the elderly frenchman, the 7 year old white girl, the aging black hippie, the Asian hospital attendtant Moroko.. , the augmented Addams-class bot Zaxx; NPCs in Dying Sun are not just static devices to provide you with healing and weapons - they have goals of their own. Your actions can change them.

* great piano music
How many times have you played a shareware/freeware RPG and it have crappy sounding techno midis as the background music? In Dying Sun, the piano is soft and smooth. courtesy of T.J. Moir. Certain points of the game have .mp3 music as well from recognizable artists (LemonHeads, Santo & Johnny, etc.) for added effect.

* Near modern-day setting
Yes, not a fantasy based game. It's set in 2038, so you get a chance to use recognizable weaponry and items.. everything from sandals to Air Force helmets, to 0.22 caliber pistols.

* meta soft system
Instead of spells, you have meta-softs.. which can be patched, increasing their power. You also have various meta-drives, used to power the metasofts.

* augmentation system
There are 6 various augmentations that can be installed, up to level 5, in Dying Sun. Each has a detailed description and may add to your hit points or meta points, increase your battle prowess or weight capacity, etc.

Interested? I'd love to hear your feedback. Please head over to the page and check it out! Your feedback is appreciated!
