Rememeber a long time ago, kids (or was it adults) that voted for the name for the new shuttle Discovery (or was it Endevor or Atlantis)?

Anyway, I propose that the name for the NEW shuttle be called:

LIBERTY

What do you think? I think it would be GREAT! Escpecially for what happened yesterday, and on 9-11-01.

Shuttle Liberty.... has a nice ring to it!!!

I thought there was already a shuttle called Liberty!
*smacks head* D'OH! It was a ship! (wasn't it? )
If it was a ship, then yeah, that's a great name!

I like it! Let's send it to NASA!

One of the Mercury capsules was named Liberty 7, so it might not work. Good idea though.

I like it. But how about Shuttle Eleutherios? Eleutherios (or simply Helius) being the greek god of freedom?

A-ha...THAT'S it! Ship indeed...*sigh* it crashed into the sea or something, didn't it? (When I said ship I was thinking shipwreck, so...*shrugs*) I remember a documentary about it during the Titanic craze.

Not the most original name, but it would probably be fitting (especially considering its an American shuttle )

The problem is that all if not of the original tooling has been scraped. And NASA is going through a new design phase for a space craft. Some of the proposals have air breathing engines as well as rockets. (Most likely a space craft launched from an aircraft.) There'll be ,most likely, a whole new round of naming for these when a design is selected.

The Liberty ships (freighters) were built during WW2 and they were known for their fast construction times - to replace the losses caused by German U-boats. I think the name Liberty is suitable for a new shuttle.

I can't see them choosing Eleutherios, WillowIX - sorry.

There was also an American ship, U.S.S. Liberty, which was sunk by the Israeli air force by mistake. Kat, I think that this is the one you are thinking of.
