I've never heard of, nor seen, a keyboard cable filter. To prevent unwanted signals on short run cables like that, you just use twisted pairs and ferrite beads.

Aha! I think you have probably struck upon the answer. If the ends of it it are both the same gender, then that's it. I've seen them for RS-232, but not for PS2. What are they used for?

no it goes ps2 male to ps2 female
and it wasn't in use, so it wasn't logging,
but it's very existance worries me

Hmmm... we're ruling out all the other possibilities. Sure you can't put a pic up?

At this point, if I were in your shoes, I'd take the critter and put it in one of my favorite safe spots. Then I'd wait for someone to ask me if they knew where it was... then I could ask them more about this thing that they're asking me about
