Sheng Ti Jian Kang (Health)
Shi Shi Shun Li (A smooth-sailing year ahead)

Happy New Year!!!
Saz, if I may
Legend has it that Buddha once asked all the animals to visit him on New Year's Day but only twelve animals showed up for the occasion. They were the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and the Boar. To show his appreciation Buddha decreed that from that day on each of these twelve animals would give their name to a whole year and the characteristics of the animal would rule that year. The origins of the Chinese astrology reach far beyond history. The system presents a complex interpretation of a ten year Sun-Moon cycle which forms the basis of an ancient Chinese agricultural calendar. The cycle is divided into five traditional elements of Chinese philosophy: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water as well as twelve symbolic animals which represent each year. (the Horse is is Water, I think, this year.) The system is influenced by a male= positve, and female=negative cosmic force, represented by the Yin Yang principle which is expression of a universal harmony and balance (it's Yin..Night this year.?).
The Horse (Elegance);
Adventurous, speedy, popular, quick always impatient, likes to be in the centre of things. Brillant rather than truly intelligent. Freedom loving, has the ability to make the most of oppertunities. Can lack judgement and can be intoxicated by own eloquence.

I can't remember the whole thing, but the order in which the animals years occur was supposedly decided by when the 12 animals had a race through a lake, and the winner was 1st, next was the one that came second etc.
I was born in the year of the tiger.

I remember a version of the story in which the Rat hid in the mane of the Ox, who was determined to get to the gathering first. Right before the Ox crossed the line, the Rat jumped down and skittered on in front, therefore winning the "first" position. The Rat represents the Thief, the Rogue, and the Trickster, and it is interesting that the archetype of "Divine Thief" is the first in the Chinese system. (Being very partial to thief-characters, I always liked this story. )

Cheers,
