I wasnt sure what the program should do, so if it isnt exactly what you need, just email me or post here and ill be glad to help you. Anyway, dont just copy/paste it !! Try to read and understand the code, so that next time (and in your exams) youŽll be able to do it by yourself

Ertai, just one question. If I do it without arrays (cause we can't use them (damnable teacher )) do I just have to add lots of variables??? That's alot of work then. It really annoys me that we can't use arrays but I asked him and he just said "If you use them, I'll take one point (out of ten) from you" thanks for the code so far

Arrays cant be used ?!?!!? . Thats weird, its the easiest and cleanest method for this program i think. Maybe they want you to use pointers ? Otherwise, i dont think that using 54 variables would be a good idea

no arrays? is the teacher dumb??

how about having the letters in a data file you can read? are you allowed that?

Yeah i also thought on that, writing the data in a file, but it would make the program slower (though i think its better than having heaps of vars). Maybe the teacher wants them to learn using dinamic vars, and they have to use a list instead of an array.

how about this then?

Have a single var with all the characters in one long string (maybe separated by pipe characters or something)

then searching along the length of the string?

this was the premise for my little pseudo earlier on, anyhow

That is stupid, but the problem is, we aren't very far yet, and the teacher didn't tought us how to use arrays yet (I know how they work).
Problem with this teacher is that he gives me the hardest assignments and I'm restricted when it comes to using "advanced" Pascal language.
I guess I'll have to go for the variables

No, i think that having 2 variables for each letter (one to know how many times it has appeared and another to know when has been the first one) is the WORST thing you can do. you could use a string as an array, converting numbers to chars by using the ASCII code, but it would restrict the number of characters that the user can type to 256. Anyway the biggest problem would be converting characters to string positions (i mean, if you want to know how many times has the character "g" appeared, you have to know that its the 7th character of the string, then you could convert the character located in that position to a integer using the ord(character) function). The second part is easy, but the position thing would require using an array of constants (which you cant use still) or a HUGE "case" instruction (which i dont think is optimizated).
