Yorick you bastard.... Thats all I can say

Okay, the first test said I was going at 23.4 megabits per second downloading a meg in 0.4 seconds...

Try again because that is obviously wrong

Test 2:

17.9 kilobits per second

Run the test again Discuss in the forum
Details

Your raw speed was 17923.64 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

17.9 kilobits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

2.2 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

7.8 minutes
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Rating

Compared to all connection types worldwide, yours is poor

ARRRRRGGHHHHH!

My creaky old 56k comes in at :

Your raw speed was 39130.64 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

39.1 kilobits per second

Storage

4.8 kilobytes per second

1MB file download

3.6 minutes

Remember - I live in Britain, where the telephone line infrastructure is about as effective as 20 guys with pieces of string and empty baked bean tins, so I'm not too unhappy.

Again, as I live in Britain, we get ripped off constantly - costs me $17.50 per month, and yes - it *is* the cheapest.

Mine came out at 1.9 mbit/sec. That was with 3 IM chat windows open and 4 web pages open. I am using cable.

I pay $A111 (US$50) a month with a 3GB/mth download limit with Telstra Bigpond Broadband. We get ROBBED here in OZ since the broadband market's effectively a duopoly.
Well at least it helped some My service is advertised at 512kbps and the best I've got is around 464kbps download - I guess you must be in a highly contended area.

Bah - at least you are on an exchange and not a sub-exchange - only 44 kpps here, and no opportunity other than shifting house to get ADSL

Most Americans appear to use cable, and so there's no speed cap on cable (not here in OZ, either, so you can hit 2000+ kbps on cable). That's because the cable infrastructure is already well set up in the US while it's only slowly filtering through Australia. DSL is much more popular in OZ but you pay for not only what you download but also how fast you download it.

If you were getting less than 2kbps on cable I'd say you have a problem.

I`m on Sattelite, now... one-way it`s about the same rate as ADSL ($90 - $110/month), two-way it`s probably a bit more expensive.
AFAIK, it is exactly the same in terms of downloads as the $90 ADSL package - 3000 MB per month free, charged heavily as soon as you go over that.
