How can I edit the Npc portraits that come packaged with the game.

First, you have to get the pictures out of the game: Create a new character, and when you're at the part where you choose your portrait, just hit the "Print Screen" key. This will make a bitmap file in your BG2 directory, that you can edit with just about any graphics program, even Paintbrush.

I doubt you`d edit them with Paintbrush: surely you`d have a graphics program on the same computer as the game ?? And I don`t think BG2 would work under Win 3.1x

Someone will rather edit screenshots, but real modders like us will rather use this. This is Infinity Explorer. Find .bmp graphics by it and save it to Override folder in your BG2 folder. Edit it by whatever you prefer. Don't forget to edit small, medium and large portrait.
