Here in the Netherlands we've got one month to change our guilders to euros. By feb. 1st guilders are useless. Some people will of course keep some of the old currency for collection-purposes; I for one have kept one of each coin. But other than that I believe the old coins will indeed be melted down and recycled.

I'd imagine they will. That's why everyone is keeping some, other than to reminisce.

Here in France, we can still use Francs and Euros until February 17th (Why the weird date ? Because the traditional winter low-price sales, sorry I dunno the English word for that, end up at this date.).
Some of the French coins have already become collectors, especially the rarest ones. I'm a sentimental person, so I have kept some Franc coins, probably most French people did the same, but I don't expect them to raise in value, I won't sell them anyway. Paying in Euros feels a bit like playing Monopoly just now ! All these shiny weird coins ... Aaah, we'll get used to it soon. And it didn't bring as much turmoil in shops as you would think. The banks are once again playing bastards though. Would you believe they want to keep punctioning a commission for change on banking transactions between Euro countries ? It will go on at least until July 2002 for getting cash from a machine and for using a credit card, and it seems that the banks will take a commission on checks forever. Grrr !

You'd have to wait a LONG time for them to become collectible
It's been 30 years since we chucked 3p coins and they're STILL not collectible |
